With its renovated interior, 30 new Dell computers and an interactive whiteboard, SCS’s media center looks like a state of the art facility. The cozy interior features light blue and brown carpeting, seagreen walls, new desks and hanging stained glass accent lights over the librarian’s desk.
But it’s the new computers and reference materials, including 5,000 ebooks from the World Book Database and 50 reference ebooks from Gale Cengage Learning in Farmington Hills that makes it more student-friendly and accessible.
Also students who wish to study without computers may do so in one part of the media center while others may use computers in another section.
The new databases also are comprehensive and give students a definite advantage when researching papers. Provided by Gale Cengage Learning, they allow students to research U.S. history, world history, global issues, science and opposing viewpoints. If students wish to research global warming, they can visit a database on global issues and view videos, maps and images, listen to podcasts and/or read news from around the world.
A search on controversial topics in the Opposing Viewpoints section produces 10,000
magazines, 4,000 academic journals, 480 books, 72,000 newspapers and 730 multimedia
items.
